Cabinet Photo titled "Humane bone pile at Cristobal Colon Cemetery, Havana, Spanish way of disposing of Human bodies S. Arakelian Havana Cuba". Image includes five men (likely American Soldiers and Businessmen)
standing on large pit of skeleton bones, one man holding skull and crossbones. See description in
BLUE
below for more information about this image. Measures
approximately 10
inches
by
8 inches for the entire card and is approximately 8 inches by 5 inches for the actual image.
Colon Cemetery in Havana, Cuba was the site of the celebrated ‘boneyard’. A single grave in the cemetery cost in rent for five years. At the end of the five years, if additional rent was not paid and if the remains were not claimed, the bones were thrown into the open pit boneyard by the cemetery authorities. To the American soldiers hanging out in post-war Havana the Colon Cemetery boneyard was a real novelty. It became a tourist attraction, and posing for a souvenir photo atop the giant pile of human remains was just part of the experience.
Photographs were taken and sold commercially as souvenir postcards to send home to their loved ones.
In the late 1890s American soldiers often removed skulls and bones and drove through the streets of Havana displaying them. Their commander, General Brooke ordered the practice to stop and gave instructions for the pit to be covered over. By 1900, the boneyard had been shielded from would-be plunderers. Even today in modern times Colon Cemetery is so crowded with graves—over 800,000 across its 140 acres—it still maintains a policy of disinterring buried remains in order to save space. Three years after someone is laid to rest, their bones are dug up, boxed, and placed in storage—out of visitors' reach.

All my
auctions are real auctions that are
"as is"
what you see is what you get, no refunds or returns unless the item you receive is not the item in the auction photos. My descriptions are my best attempt to say what I think the item is, I am not an expert and the written words should only be used as a guideline... what you are buying is what you see in the photos, any word descriptions are done in good faith to the best of my opinion but are not guaranteed, you are buying what is in the photos not the words. Shipping from Canada to other countries costs more than domestic USA postal rates because I am shipping from an other country. I am shipping from Canada so it will take longer to get to other countries like the USA than your own domestic shipping because of the time it takes for items to cross the border and for customs clearances, so please be patient. Items shipped outside of Canada may be subject to your country's customs fees, taxes, laws and regulations... all these including item legality and any other additional fees are the buyers responsibility. Yes I combine shipping on multiple items to save you shipping costs. If you have any questions feel free to send me a message. If you have any problems or concerns with your order please contact me first before leaving feedback so we can work it out, I want happy customers. Enjoy the auction!
