Description: 1898 Admiral Dewey Manila Bay USS Olympia So Called Dollar Aluminum/Tin 35mm1899 aluminum or tin medal issued in celebration of Dewey's historic victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
Obverse features right-facing bust of Dewey in his regalia, likely referencing the famous portrait of him published in

, encircled by the text "Admiral Geo. Dewey." Reverse depicts a rope encircling Dewey's flagship the U.S.S. Olympia which is identified below, perimeter reads, "Manila Bay May 1, 1898."
George Dewey (1837-1917) was an Admiral of the U.S. Navy and remains the only individual to have achieved the rank. He is third to only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the amount of numismatics created in his honor.
Dewey became a national icon after he led an attack on Manila Bay, sinking the entire Spanish Pacific fleet while suffering only minor casualties. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay was widely lauded in the United States, and he was subsequently promoted to Admiral of the Navy and celebrated through the production of various medals, tokens, and ephemera.

Condition:
Very good, antique condition, as found. Scuffing and patina throughout. Very minor scratching. Discoloration on both figure and background of obverse, concentrated to recessed areas of reverse.
