Description
Spanish American War large lithograph. This original print is remarkable for it's many depictions of that war in general and that this print was presented to one seaman.
It reads: THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA to G W STARK Ordinary Seaman for service in the SPANISH AMERICAN WAR 1898 - 1899. Between those words is: USRS (?) Independence.
This litho measures 17 1/8" by 22 1/2". Lower left corner: Harry R Hopps Des. (Harry Hopps was an artist and designed this).
Lower right corner: lith Britton & Rey SF (San Francisco printer). (see photos).
The entire litho is lithographed but the Seamans name and ship(?) are written by hand.
Spectacular pictorial art from this late nineteenth century American war and loaded with American flags, soldiers firing weapons, battleships, jungle landscape, huge angel draped in American flag! It's all here. Amazing.
Litho is laid down on fairly thick paperboard from that period. Not sure if that laying down in original but it has helped keep this fragile print intact and print and backing appear to be from same period.
One corner is taped on back but has not separated as can be seen on the front of that corner.
Minor perimeter tears and a bit of brown little stains to lower right.
Overall darkening to paper but fairly well preserved.
Unframed.
Carefully shipped.
Questions always welcome and thanks for looking.
