Lacemaking: a hobby for old ladies? Think again!
In Flanders,
lace
is not merely a craft but a part of the region's cultural
heritage
. The roots of Flemish lace go back as far as the 15th century, and remain strong, with
today
's designers producing stunning creations.
In the early 20th century, there were approximately 47,000 lace makers in Belgium. Around 70% of these worked in Bruges
, which led to the founding of the Bruges Lacemaking School in 1911. Girls from 14 and up were, taught about lace, but also received lessons in religion, arithmetic, trade and political economics. They made lace fringes for men's and women's clothing, as well as entire christening dresses, special collars and cuffs. Other lace creations were often framed behind glass.
These days, handmade lace is usually homemade by dedicated , sharp-eyed hobbyists who love their work. Lacemakers create their own patterns or trace tried-and-true designs, and unlike knitting, it requires total concentration to follow the intricate patterns. A piece of lace takes days to make, which is why a handmade tablecloth can easily sell for €250.
Bobbins are the essential tool for the lace maker. They must be small and delicate enough to hold the fine threads, yet heavy enough to keep tension on the individual strands. The oval bottom adds weight and makes for easy handling.
