Ulysses S. Grant III (1881-1968) was a grandson of Ulysses S. Grant and a career Army officer.
Born on the 4th of July, Grant studied at West Point and finished sixth in the class of 1903 (Douglas MacArthur finished first). His service with the Army placed him in various locations throughout the world with the Army Corps of Engineers and the General Staff Corps. In 1904 Grant served as an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. Grant met his future wife while he was at the White House.
In 1907, Grant married Edith Root (1878–1962), the daughter of Elihu Root, the former Secretary of War and Secretary of State. They had three daughters: Edith, Clara Frances, and Julia.
He was a veteran of both World War I and World War II and retired at the rank of
Major General
in 1946.
He signed the back of this USMA document as a Freshman cadet "Private" acting adjutant at West Point (see pic)

Subsequently, upon being promoted to the grade of Brigadier General, he displayed marked leadership and high military attainments in command of the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, 5th Division, in the Meuse-Argonne offensive…”

BIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL RIVERS
William Cannon Rivers
was born on January 11, 1866 in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee.  He
Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1887 (24
th
in his class), and was
Commissioned Second lieutenant 1st Cavalry, United States Army on June 12, 1887. He was promoted through grades to Colonel on July 1, 1916, and Brigadier General on October 1, 1918.
During the Indian Wars, Rivers served in troubles with Northern Cheyenne and Sioux Indians from 1890-1891.
During the Spanish American War he served as an officer in the 11
th
US Cavalry and 1
st
US Cavalry.
During WWI, he was brigadier General commanding the 76
th
Field Artillery regiment, receiving the US Distinguished Service Medal from President Woodrow Wilson, the Croix de Guerre (French), and colors of 76th Field Artillery decorated with Croix de Guerre.
From 1920-1923, Gen. Rivers served as Commandant of Fort Myer, Virginia.
In 1927, Rivers was appointed by President Coolidge Inspector General of the  United States Army, with the rank of Major General.
Gen. Rivers retired from the US Army on January 11, 1930.
He was a member of the Huguenot Society of America, S.R. Society Army of Santiago de Cuba, and the
American Academy of Political and Social Sciences.
Gen. Rivers died on July 10, 1943 (aged 77) at Fletcher, Henderson County, North Carolina and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery (Section: SO, Site: 4021-B).

The President of the United States of America (Woodrow Wilson), authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General William Cannon Rivers, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Commander of the 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, Colonel Rivers was a material factor in stemming the tide of the enemy's advance during the second Battle of the Marne.
