You are bidding on a set of forty-three (43) vintage
Stereopticon View Cards
with original photographs taken during the
Spanish-American
war of 1898. When viewed in a stereopticon viewer, these scenes will appear in 3-D.
These view cards were produced by such companies as Keystone, Strohmeyer & Wyman, Underwood & Underwood, Kilburn and several smaller companies.
There are scenes showing the wrecked battleship
Maine
, soldiers in camp and in the field, troops waiting to embark for Cuba, President William McKinley and his top generals, key naval officers and battleships that participated in that war, etc. (See the representative sampling of cards posted with the auction.)
This set of view cards comes from a non-smoking household, with each of the cards inside of its own protective Mylar sleeve.
For the most part, the images do not appear faded and the cards themselves appear to be in good condition for being 123 years old.
