Rare, Unique, Original Spanish-American War Alligator Skin Campaign Hat, identified to Private John Garbrey, Company E, 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, National Guard (1898). A resident of Philadelphia, Pa., he enrolled on May 10, 1898, mustered in on May 11, 1898, and deserted on July 7, 1898, at Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Georgia. Pvt. Garbrey marked his name on the inside leather sweatband.
A one-of-a-kind item, the hat came from renowned Maryland collector C. Edward Kemp in 2014.
