From the 1898 Spanish-American War.
Rare, Unique STAR PATTERN!
8-1/4 ft. by 5-1/3 ft.
DESCRIPTION:
This auction is for a scarce antique linen bunting United States Flag, with 45 sewn-on stars.
I researched the unusual, unique Star pattern and found out that it is extremely rare!
This 124-year-old, original, American Flag
is in excellent condition, considering its age.
This Is Not A Reproduction:
it may have been used in battle, or as a victory or parade Flag. My adopted grandfather, who served in the Spanish-American War, brought this flag home with him from Cuba.
I know its history (see below).
The colors are still strong. The left side is reinforced canvas-style. The colors are still strong.
It measures an impressive 8 feet/ 3 inches wide by 5 feet/ 4 inches in height.
The flag has some small holes, a small amount of color bleeding, a brownish stain on one of the stars, and some fraying at the corners and edges
(See Pictures)
...no doubt from over a century of usage
.
It has been kept clean, and for the last 20+ years, it has been in a smoke-free storage.
HISTORY:
This Flag was a gift, in 1972, from my (adopted) Grandpa Allen, who lived to the age of 98, and had served in the Spanish-American War. He was in the American Infantry at the Battle for San Juan Heights (Kettle Hill & San Juan Hill) on July 1, 1898. Grandpa Allen told me about the battle, the heavy gunfire, and the casualties around him. He feared for his life. He told me...in his words...'Teddy Roosevelt was on his horse, cackling orders like a parrot!' They went up Kettle Hill first and then took San Juan Hill soon after. From San Juan Hill they could see Santiago, and, on July 2, they started a siege of that city. He always enjoyed telling me that story. Grandpa Allen said that he brought this Flag home with him from Cuba when he was recalled to Stateside. I displayed this Flag for decades, however, it has been in storage for more than 20 years.
The 45-Star Flag:
was created on
July 4, 1896, by the addition of Utah as the 45th State. This Flag represented the United States for 12 years, until July 3, 1908. (On July 4, 1908, our Flag added Oklahoma as the 46th State.)
The Spanish-American War:
The 45-Star Flag was flown during the Spanish-American War (April 25, 1898-December 10, 1898).
The USS Maine was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. As a result, the
United States declared war on Spain.
M
ilitary action began in June when the Marines captured Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Theodore Roosevelt formed the first Volunteer Cavalry Regiment better known as the "Rough Riders", and, on July 1, led them in a charge up "Kettle Hill" which flanked the Spanish block house on San Juan Hill. Roosevelt led a series of charges up Kettle Hill towards San Juan Heights, on his horse, Texas, while the Rough Riders followed on foot. He later called it, "the greatest day of my life."
During
the 1896 to 1908 time frame:
(1) Walter Reed, an army doctor, developed medical treatment for yellow and typhoid fevers. (2) President McKinley was assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. (3) The Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight. (4) The first wireless message was sent across the ocean. (5) The 'Great White Fleet' of U.S. warships sailed on a 14-month Good Will Tour of the world.
(6)
The Panama Canal was obtained from Panama. (7) The San Francisco earthquake destroyed the city and killed 452 people. (8) Albert Einstein published his "Theory of Relativity." (9) U.S. claims were settled in the Alaska Boundary Dispute. (10) The American Standard Version of the King James Bible was published. (11) Japan defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese war. (12) President Roosevelt became the first American to win the Noble Peace Prize for helping to end the conflict.
