    Description

This is a U.S. Model 1872 General Issue sword belt plate in use from 1872 - 1905. Being of stamped brass with belt bar and "D" buckle attachment on back. Most likely a survivor of the Spanish American War of 1898. These thin, stamped brass versions differ from the U.S. Model 1851 Civil War plate in that the Civil War plates were cast in solid brass, poured in a mold and not stamped of sheet brass. C.W. era plates also had the belt bar on the side. Many C.W. plates also exhibit bench mark numbers in the lower left corner, when you flip them over. Belt plate and it's keeper were numbered to match.
It would make an excellent addition to any collection.
