Description: Late 19th c. Admiral Dewey Welcome Home Souvenir Medal Spanish-American War
Late 19th century gilt enamel medal issued in celebration of Dewey's historic victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Obverse features a bust of Admiral George Dewey in central cartouche encircled by the text, "The Nation's Hero, Admiral Geo. Dewey," and a laurel wreath, topped with two flags and an eagle. Pinback obverse reads, "welcome." Reverse features unusual low relief engraving of Dewey's flagship Olympia.
George Dewey (1837-1917) was an Admiral of the U.S. Navy and remains the only individual to have achieved the rank. He is third to only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the amount of numismatics created in his honor.
Dewey became a national icon after he led an attack on Manila Bay, sinking the entire Spanish Pacific fleet while suffering only minor casualties. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay was widely lauded in the United States, and he was subsequently promoted to Admiral of the Navy and celebrated through the production of various medals, tokens, and ephemera.
