Description
Available is a Model 1895 Navy Blue or Black Enlisted Man's Cap or Hat that would have been worn during the Spanish American War era.The hat has a wool top featuring four grommets (two on each side). It has a black leather visor and a New York 9th Infantry, 2nd Regiment, Company I gilt screw back cap device. The original leather chinstrap and gold colored New Jersey National Guard side buttons are present. The hat has its original leather sweatband. The crown of the black silk interior lining is embossed in silver and reads, "GEO. W. HOTTEL/33 E. STATE ST./TRENTON, N.J." on four lines with embellishments. The original red and white size 7 sticker is still present on the rear of the sweatband. While I didn't see a name in the hat, I’m not sure there isn’t one. I just didn’t look too hard or bend the sweatband completely back.
The hat is in solid structural condition given its age, but does show some wear. The top of the hat has three large areas of moth nips. In addition, there is some mothing along the left side of the hat. The visor itself shows some age (as normal), but the stitching is all in place. The hat badge has some tarnish and has been slightly bent. The chinstrap is in nice shape and the silk lining couldn’t be in better condition. About six inches of the leather sweatband needs to be re-stitched to the frame. Please be sure to check out the large photos I have posted and judge condition for yourself.
