    Description

OLD PHOTO OF NAVAL SURGEON DAVID BELL KERR AUGUSTA COUNTY VA WITH GENEALOGICAL NOTATION
A nice portrait photograph (about 5.5 x 7.5") taken in San Francisco, California circa 1900. The subject is DAVID BELL KERR in full uniform of a Naval Surgeon with Hat, Epaulets, Sword, etc.
This is a rather unusual photograph, larger than Cabinet Card size, and the cardboard backing to the photo is quite THICK (almost 1/4" thick) and beveled outwards around the photo. This appears to be layered cardboard but is almost wood-like in its stiffness. The image has excellent contrast and is in good condition except for a few dings, spots & other marks (see scan below). The photo has a blind-stamp on the front and a printed logo on the back advertising photographers Boyé & Habenicht of 1026 Market Street in San Francisco, CA. Kerr likely had the image taken on a Naval cruise to the west coast.
There is some interesting genealogical information hand-written in both ink & pencil on the reverse of the photo:
    "

Loaned to Elizabeth July 9-19 1947

Records show that David Bell Kerr (1872-1907 aged 34–35)is buried at the Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia.
He must have died soon after this photograph was taken.
His parents were James Turk Kerr (1844–1912) and Sallie J. Myers Kerr (1843–1882).
James Turk Kerr's brother was Samuel Holmes Kerr (1839-1917) Augusta County, VA. He served in CO. E 1st VA. CALVARY C.S.A. He died in Waynesboro and is buried in Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fishersville, Augusta County, Virginia.
Samuel Holmes Kerr's daughter was Janetta Kerr Jones (1883–1974). Her sister was Elizabeth Barry Kerr (1886–1968).
