This auction is for an original 1899 Span-Am War Army of the Philippines Society Bronze Cross Medal.
The Army of the Philippines Society membership medal (Type 1), bronze made, with applied sun and star devices on the ribbon. This first style ribbon was quickly redesigned after President McKinley found the flag ribbon to be offensive to the Philippines. The Type 1 medal was issued for less than one year (1899). Made by BB&B. Enamel work on arms and medallions are excellent. No damage or issues with medal. Hanger is for a VFW chaplain made in gilt brass, unmarked.
This is named to Samuel J Smith, 8th Corps chaplain Army of the Philippines, who was in country from 1901. His named medal grouping will be listed soon as well. (See last image)
