Description
This listing is for an original pay roll voucher to pay members of troop "I", 4th U.S. Cavalry, stationed at Norzagaray, Luzon,Phillipines at the end ofApril, 1899. Voucher No. 319 paid the troopers for the months of March and April, 1899. This troop was busy during the first half of the year; 15 engagements from February 15, until June 3. Two engagements with rebels on the 24th and 25th of April at Norzagaray. According the the voucher, Captain Lockett was assigned as aide to the commanding general. The 1st Lt. was in transit to join the troop. That left the only officer, 2Lt Charles T. Boyd, to handle all duties of the troop that an officer was tasked to do, including being the payroll officer. 2 Lt. Charles Trumbull Boyd was a graduate of West Point, class of 1896. His first posting was to the 4th Cavalry. According to Heitman's book, he was a temporary Major in the 37th U.S. Volunteers from July 5, 1899 until 20 Feb, 1901. He transferred to the 7th Cavalry as 1Lt. in 1901, and returned to the 4th Cavalry that same year. His last assignment was to the segregated 10th Cavalry as captain in 1903. This document is hand signed in three places by 2Lt. Boyd. It has been folded in the correct manner forever. The paper is still pliable, and there is very little loss at the edges. Most of the ink details are still very readable.
What makes this voucher unusual is what happened to Charles Boyd during the Punitive Expedition into Mexico. The internet goes into much detail, so I'll just give a short footnote. On June 21, 1916, as captain of a troop of 10th Cavalry troopers, his unit and another troop got into a firefight with a (friendly) Mexican army unit. Captain Boyd was killed, along with 16 troopers. Wounded totalled 10, with 23 prisoners. Most of the survivors made it back to their lines on foot; the Mexican troops had stampeded their horses. General Pershing wanted to declare war on Mexico, but calmer heads prevailed. An unusual document relating to the Philippine Insurrection, and the Punitive Expedition as well. A good item for someone who collects either or both
