Description
USS Independence was a three-masted , 90 gun ship of the line that was launched in 1814.After leaving Boston Navy Yard, she took up station with the USS Constitution to protect the waters around Boston Harbor, while under the command of Commodore William Bainbridge (commanding squadron).
Shortly after was sent to the Barbary Coast in the Mediterranean.
Refitted and re-commissioned in 1837; with service in the Mexican and Civil Wars.
Became a receiving ship late in her career and this image taken of her at Mare, Island, California, circa 1900-1912.
Image quality is fine for this un-mounted photo, 6x8, with light wear.
