Description
This is a one of a kind item and a wow. The Sugar Point fiasco is known as the last Native American uprising in the US. Really, a rather pathetic situation of Native abuse and a response of "We are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore." Generally, the Chippewa were having their forests stolen and constantly taken a long way off to be witnesses in court for a myriad of things. They fought back in this case and 19 Chippewa beat an assembled group of locally stationed and quickly assembled US soldiers. According to Wikipedia, 7 US soldiers were killed, (one Indian Scout in error.) The fact that the soldiers killed their own scout in error speaks to things. The Army said that one of their rifles went off by mistake and that precipitated the mess and the Natives say the Army was firing on a canoe of women. 16 soldiers were wounded. There were no casualties on the native side. (Sounds like the Army got its butt kicked.)The center of the framed photos is of the caskets laid out. The photos appear to be of the soldiers that were killed there minus the Indian scout. This includes Brevet Major Wilkinson, Sgt. Butler upper right, Lt. Terry Ross upper left was not identified as killed or wounded, I do not know the identification of the other 3.
This is a very rare opportunity to pick up an original Indian War item. Not exactly sure of what the meaning was to the US Army participant that framed this, I had his name but can not find at the moment. He went on to serve in the Spanish American War and thrive and served in WWI and then worked for President Hoover. This then came from his son's estate here in GA. Total framed size is about 12" x 20". Looks to have been framed since the early 1900s.
