Description
Rare 1st Vermont Infantry medal, for Spanish American War Veteran, Company “F.” Measures approximately 1 1/2” across. Presented as a gift from Dr. W. Steward Webb to the members of the First Vermont Infantry in 1899. Approximately 1030 medals were issued, being made from metal taken from Admiral Cervera’s flagship “Maria Teresa”. The top suspension bar reads FIRST VERMONT INFANTRY U.S.V.. Reverse of medal has the inscription “The Gift of W.S. Webb” and is stamped “Co. F”. Marked to J K DAVISON PHILA. on the reverse of the suspension. Although privately funded, this medal was treated as an official award. Bronze and gilt. Shows light wear with the gilt worn from the high points and at the base of the reverse. Storage type knocks. The enamel is intact, but there is a small crack at the upper left corner of the top arm.
