Soldier’s Manila Made Slippers & Cabinet Photos from P.I. Insurrection, 1898-99
These slippers and photos belonged to Private Morgie D. Graham, of Co. “F” 51st Iowa Infantry, who served in the regiment in the Philippines 1898 – 1899. From Decatur, Iowa, later lived in Burlington, North Dakota.
The slippers make not of the place of making as Manila, P.I.  The bodies are a dark blue velvet, (now a purplish color), and embroidered with white stars, and flowers and leaves in red, white and blue thread; leather insteps and soles.
The four cabinet photos in order of image placement; 1. Labeled, Church at San Pedro Macati; annotated: “In this church the Co. F. boys slept, on pure mahogany planks they made their & dinner table & here made the kettles of candy and cooked the tough chicken all night in an earthen pot on the pot ashes!! 1898.”  2. Insurgent Trench at San Fernando; (front) “Phillipine Trenches 1899.”  3. Insurgent bomb proof trench at Calumpit;  “This is where the 51st Iowa Co. F. fought – Morgie wanted to cross this bridge but didn’t!!”  4.  No label.  “Cavite. the causeway   Naval Center. 1898  This place was where Morgie did his first guard duty in the Philippines.”
One other image is a retake of the original of Morgie in the Philippines in 1898 wearing his field gear and holding his Krag rifle. 5×7 approximately.
The images are on the light side, but fairly clear.  The images I have taken have been darkened to see details better.
Overall size 8.5 x 10 inches; image size 4 x 6 1/4 inches.
Slippers have been used, but in very good condition.  Don’t see many of the creature comforts brought home from the Spanish American War and insurrection.
Comes with National Archives records, roster of his company.
