    Description

This is an exceptionally fine Spanish American War Model 1898 Officer’s hat that remains in excellent condition. It is constructed of fine Navy-Blue Melton wool with a black ribbed mohair hatband and two black enameled metal air vent grommets on either side. Directly hand embroidered to the front in metallic gold bullion thread is a beautiful American Officer’s eagle insignia. This insignia shows exceptional detail and is with an attractive light age toned patina. The visor is of tared patent leather and tightly sewn in place. It is crazed from exposure to heat probably while in storage. The original gold brocade officer’s chinstrap is in place and secured at the sides by a 3-piece officer’s gold eagle button. The interior is lined with black polished cotton. The leather sweatband is sewn firmly in place with some stitching having come lose in a one-inch spot near the right front. The interior dome is beautifully maker marked in silver leaf within a diamond shaped logo with, “GEO. EVANS & CO. – MILITARY FURNISHERS – 132 N. FIFTH ST. – PHILA PA.”. There is not a single hole or any moth damage to the wool. A prime example of a classic piece of Spanish American War headgear that is excellent, untouched condition.
