Description
In 1874 the US Army adopted a new haversack that was to replace the M1851 pattern that had been in use since the Civil War. This haversack was designed to be used with a new brace system, which was ultimately scrapped but the haversack itself was retained. With further revision of the basic design, the army settled on the M1878 haversack that was to stay in use through the Spanish American War and beyond. After complaints were received from the field during the war, the haversack was increased in size in 1898.This is a nice solid example of the M1878/1904 haversack. The example featured here is the larger version of the 1878 pattern, which would indicate manufacture from 1898 to about 1904 (after 1904 the attachment system was changed). As you can see, this one was used by a soldier with Battery F, 8th Artillery. Both coastal and field artillery units of this unit designation were formed 1916 or later, so it is most likely that this haversack was used by one of the state artillery units. Nonetheless, key piece of equipment for the collector of American field gear!
The haversack remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. One rivet on the closure tab is missing. There is an old identification written in ink, and then blotted our on the inside cover - unable to tell what it says. There is an area at the top-rear of the pack that appears to be painted gray - not sure what the intention of what this was, perhaps as a place to write a name. Please see the pictures for more detail.
