Spanish American War New Orleans Soldiers Catholic St.Rita Medal Case. During the Spanish American War New Orleans area Catholic Nuns gave these cased St. Rita Medals to soldiers that were leaving to fight the war. There are several versions of this medal and case. Some with St. Joseph, Some with Mary Case measures 1" closed.
I've heard stories that they were also given out, by the Catholic Nuns of New Orleans, to soldiers leaving for WWI, however I cannot verify this.
