The box reads, A piece of the battleship Maine. Brought by Walter Scott when he returned home from the Army.
From basic research done, this Walter Scott could possibly be the one attached to the 1st New York Volunteer Infantry, 10th New York National Guard in the Spanish American War.
The only provenance is the information obtained on the box as I received the item with a bunch of of Spanish American War related items.
Size of wood is 1.5 x 3.5 inches. The box is approximately 3 x 6 inches.
