    Description

    U.S.S. New Orleans Spanish American War presentation sword presented to Paymaster Livingston Hunt, U.S.N. Hunt volunteered for hazardous duty aboard U.S.S. Merrimac which was used as a blockship at the entrance to Santiago, Cuba Harbor. He was not one of the eight men selected for that mission all of whom were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Engraving on the sword blade reads:

    U.S.S. NEW ORLEANS, SANTIAGO MAY 31. JUNE 6-14-16 1898. VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE ON THE MERRIMAC ON 3RD DAY OF JUNE 1898, PORTO RICO JULY-AUGUST 1898.
    Side Two of sword blade:
    PAYMASTER LIVINGSTON HUNT, U.S.N. FROM HIS BROTHERS AND SISTER. RIDGELY-THOMAS-RANDELL-WILLIAM H-CORNELIA RIDGELY GAILLARD.
    Paymaster Hunt, son of a CSA Civil War veteran, concluded his Naval career as a rear admiral.
    Sword and scabbard are both straight and solid. Probably due to water damage (most likely due to storage in a basement which in very old home of those times leaked badly during rainy seasons), both sword and scabbard have some aging defects. The scabbard is in surprising good condition with some greenish areas on the brass. The sword blade will need re-chroming in order to bring it to an appearance of the day it was produced, but looks nice as is. The grip, guard, and pommel are dirty but can be fairly easily cleaned.
