    Description

We have handled several of these so called “war diary” slouch hats over the years, and owned this one for over 20.
It came from an extensive and advanced collection assembled by a good friend and was one of two we were able to purchase from his estate.
Somewhere we have a deciphered sketch of all the markings that he did, but have not been able to locate it.
So please base your bids on what you see here – we will include the drawing only if we can find it.
The hat belonged to a William Smith of Company H.
Unfortunately we cannot decipher a unit number or state.
[our other war diary hat is 1
    st
Delaware, but not sure if this is from the same unit or not.]
There are crossed rifles with H above on the front of the crown, and crossed sabers on the rear.
The other inscriptions show tents, a coffee pot, a bugler and other scenes with descriptions, mostly humorous.
Should be a fun research project and these personalized slouch hats are much more rare and interesting than the standard examples.
    Shipping weight 2 pounds.
