    Description

    M1898 Shoulder Haversack
Original Spanish-American War era M1898 shoulder haversack, khaki canvas construction featuring main flap with pocket on underside secured by two leather thongs and a slot on each side, main pocket with slot on each side for eating utensils and the commonly missing removeable khaki canvas ration insert [often referred to as a "bacon bag"] which attaches to two steel sunburst-pattern tack type buttons. Main flap has brass frame and tongue adjuster buckle and strap with brass grommets, and there are two brass D rings on back for attaching shoulder strap [strap not present]. Well marked U.S. on flap but no date or manufacturer markings.
Moderate fading from use but no holes, fraying or other damage. Faint unit number written above U.S., initials J.D.R. and service number written under flap and on main pocket [these do not show when flap is closed]. Haversack was a slightly larger version of the Model 1878 and was made for about 5 years in this configuration [its successor was the same size and construction, but had hooks on back for attaching to pocket-type cartridge belts]. Nice piece for any pre-WW1 US web gear or Spanish-American war collection and is in fine condition. Any questions please feel free to ask.
