    Description

    Spanish-American War Mess Kit Utensils
Original Spanish-American War period eating utensils for use with Model 1874 type meat can [mess kit], as follows:
Knife: Steel blade with rounded tip and cast steel handle, overall length 9 3/4 inches. Unmarked. Handle still retains approx. 50% original black japanned finish on recessed parts. No nicks to blade and no pitting or other damage.
Fork: Steel three prong construction with cast steel handle, overall length 7 3/4 inches. Unmarked. Handle still retains approx. 50% original black japanned finish on recessed parts. No rust, pitting or other damage.
These utensils were known as "Substitute Standard" or "contingency" type, made by commercial contractors since the government arsenals that usually made utensils could not keep up with demand caused by troop increases during the war. Nice set for display with any mess kit or haversack from the period, in fine condition and one price gets both! Any questions please feel free to ask.
