The rips and tears are typical of the damage inflicted on a ships flag due to weather and/or battle conditions and is sold "as is" as such. Multiple reapair and fabric/hand
    stitching
    have been added
    during
the same period and show same color fades with age and sea and
    element
exposure. The rope is correct period and remains with the same metal loops when tying and raising the flags on the ships mast.

    Product Description
    :
Massive 45-Star US cotton heavy-duty hand stitched flag, measuring an
    extremely
large 12'x 18' or 12 feet x 18 feet in overall size. This flag was recently purchased and removed from a residence in New York. This amazing 45-Star US Naval flag has the heavy duty weathered stitching, multi layered side panel, and a very sturdy rope ties to hold the flag in mast. This flag is very in size as it
    needed
    be easily
visible on the top of the battle ships.
    It is
    similar
in size to similar WWI and WWII battle ship Naval Flag
I have owned personally and sold to private collectors and directly to museums in North America.
It is not uncommon for USS battleship flags to be unmarked. Unfortunately, unless written by the soldiers or Naval dock crew
many did not maintain the name once taken down from the battle ship thus this is not unusual for a 45
stat naval flag of this size to be unmarked
    .
    There are many
accounts of battleships decommissioned and deaccessed flags
    that
were sometimes removed in order to maintain secrecy.
This flag was a great discovery and I would rank it up there with some of our greatest we've uncovered to date. It holds such a major symbol of our nation, potentially flown during major naval battles and rising above all others as the symbol of freedom that so many have laid down their lives defending it.
In the listing you will see reference photos of Spanish American
    War
    time photos
including the same type of 45 star flag
in similar size to the one listing in auction.
