    Description

Patriotic paperweight in memory of the sinking of the battleship USS MAINE.
Three weeks after arriving in Havana Harbor, February 15, 1898, She
was shattered by two separate explosions and sank. 260 Navy men were killed. Public sentiment called for the MAINE
    and
    American
    honor be
    avenged
    . D
iplomatic failures to resolve the matter along with American concern over Spanish suppression of the Cuban rebellion and continued losses to American investment led to the outbreak of the Spanish-America War
    in April 1898.
The paperweight shows a photographic image of the battleship, and medallion images of Admiral Dewey, Rear Admiral Sampson, General Fitzhugh Lee, and Major General Nelson Miller, along with a patriotic eagle.
The paperweight glass is in very good condition with no chips or other flaws. The image is faded.  Marked on the bottom of the paperweight, "Pyrophoto Company, 47 Crosby Street, New York" as shown.
